Wyoming is home to Yellowstone, America’s first National Park.  It also has 6 other units in the National Park Service and 1 affiliated site. Here’s our list to help you plan to visit all the National Park Service sites in Wyoming!


Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

The Yellowtail Dam in Montana created this recreation area which stretches south into Wyoming.  It offers many opportunities for those who like to spend a day boating on the water. Downstream the consistent flow has led to the development of a world-class trout fishing area. This area on the Bighorn River sees close to 100,000 fishermen (and women) each year.

California National Historic Trail

The California National Historic Trail has portions in 10 different states. The tracks of a quarter million emigrants can still be seen on many portions of the trail still today. Today modern-day car tour routes that follow a similar path. Check out the one for Wyoming here.

Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower National Monument was created by President Theodore Roosevelt on September 24th 1906. It was the first National Monument created by the powers granted to the president in the historic 1906 Antiquities Act that was less than 3 months old. This concluded efforts to preserve the site dating back to 1892.

Fort Laramie National Historic Site

The restored buildings at Fort Laramie trace their origins back to 1849 and are some of the oldest buildings in Wyoming.

Fossil Butte National Monument

Railroad workers originally discovered some of the major fossil beds at Fossil Butte National Monument in the 1860’s. However the site was not added to the park service until 1972 by President Nixon. Fossil Butte is well-known as a home to some of the world’s best fossil beds.

Grand Teton National Park

NPS website

Grand Teton National Park is one of Wyoming’s gems.  Towering high above the Jackson valley floor, the Grand Teton is the second highest peak in Wyoming and one of the world’s most famous climbing destinations. While there was support on many levels for the creation of Yellowstone, the creation of Grand Teton National Park has a more colorful history. A brief account of how this park came to be can be found here.

John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway Sign

John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway is administered by Grand Teton National Park and serves as a connection from Tetons in the south to Yellowstone National Park in the North. The parkway’s namesake, John D. Rockefeller was a major contributor to many National Park sites across the country. John started buying land as early as 1927, land that was later donated to the NPS as Grand Teton National Park.  The family served as a key part of the park’s expansion between when it was created in 1943 and the family’s last donation in 2001.

Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail

Started by Brigham Young and 140 others in 1846, nearly 70,000 Mormons made the journey west on the 1300-mile Mormon Pioneer Trail to Salt Lake City, Utah by the 1870s. Wyoming is home to several sites on the trail including Fort Laramie, Casper, and Fort Bridger.

Oregon National Historic Trail

Thousands of people spent an unimaginable about of sweat and tears making the historic 2,000 mile journey that today we could fly for just a few hundred dollars. Wyoming is home to several sites on the trail including Fort Laramie, Casper, and Fort Bridger.

Pony Express National Historic Trail

In the age of email, Skype, and cell phones it is hard to imagine that just over 100 years ago the most practical way for most of the Midwest and Eastern U.S. to communicate with the west coast was via a horse relay system that took ONLY 10 days.

Created in 1872 as the first national park in the world, Yellowstone is where it all started! This UNESCO World Heritage Site is certainly a heavily traveled site everyone should visit at least once. Busy season is the summer months, with best times to visit the park either before the typical school year ends or after the typical school year begins for a more quiet and calm experience.
